About Milford, CT - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
The land which, at present, contains Milford, Orange, and West Haven, CT was purchased on February 1, 1639, from the chief of the local Paugussets Native American tribe. Originally, the area was known as "Wepawaug", for the little river which scuttles through the township and which has given its name to quite a few streets in both Milford and Orange. A grist mill was first built over the Wepawaug River in 1640. Over the years, Milford became known for shipbuilding, farming and oystering. During this time, Milford also became known as a seashore resort for people from New Haven and Bridgeport. Interestingly, the borders of the ultimate town charter approved by the State of Connecticut in 1899 to Laurel Beach are enclosed fully within Milford and all mail to Laurel Beach inhabitants is mailed to Milford. The residents of this town get the best of both worlds. They live in a rural area with stunning homes and expansive lawns but can get to Grand Central Station in NYC in just over a half hour via the New Haven Line. The first Milford Oyster Festival was first celebrated in 1975 and the oyster festival firmly established as a yearly Milford tradition, held rain or shine – snow or sun!
The town was the home of the first computer camp in 1977 - at the local Amity Jr. High School. During the Cold War, Orange served as a site for the permanent deployment of Nike missiles for the protection of Greater New Haven. This town and others in the area are the perfect blends of modern and traditional. The adjacent community Orange exhibits this. Its rural roots are celebrated at the annual Orange Country Fair featuring:
- Horse, oxen and tractor pulls
- exhibits of animals
- flowers
- fruits
- vegetables
- baked goods
In the heat and sun of early August, the town supports the Orange Volunteer Firemen with a fair, which raises money to support the fire department.
